First in War

Alfred Cecil Alford, the first KU student or alumnus killed in any war, dies near Caloocan, Philippines during the Philippine-American War. He fought in Company B of the Kansas Infantry under the command of another KU man, Colonel (later Major-General) Frederick Funston.
According to the 1899 Oread Yearbook, Alford was born in Lawrence, KS. His ancestors had been soldiers in the American Revolution and the uncle he was named for, Alfred Cecil, was killed in an early battle of the war. His grandfather Joseph Savage, came to Kansas from Vermont to help make Kansas a free state. His mother, Susan Savage Alford, was a member of KU’s first class in 1866.
