Piece of Historic Fence Stolen
A century-old iron fence was damaged over the March 17-18 weekend outside the Sprague Apartments near 14th Street and Jayhawk Boulevard.
A five-foot section also was removed as well as some additional ornamental iron pillars. KU Endowment officials are requesting that the pieces be returned, no questions asked, so the fence can become whole again. The fence runs along the south sidewalk of 14th Street.
The only way to mend the historic fence without the pieces would be to have custom castings made of the fence; a solution that is less than ideal. Monte Soukup, senior vice president for property management, is hoping to have the pieces returned to maintain the integrity of the fence.
The police report listed loss and damage at $10,000. The endowment association owns Sprague Apartments, a facility for retired faculty members.
