It All Started Here
On the morning of September 12, 1866, forty-nine students attended the first day of classes at the University of Kansas. The number of students enrolled would climb to fifty-five by week’s end…twenty-six ladies and twenty-nine men. Although annual tuition was a whopping $30, the students were not really ready to attend college as they had a hodge-podge of education under their belts. So, what would turn into a great university, started out more like a high school. The students were not prepared for college and would take college prep courses instead of college level coursework. It would take until 1873 for the first group of students to become University of Kansas graduates.
