Each Year Is A Banner Year

The University of Kansas has great history and traditions.  But many people don’t know about our commencement banner tradition.

Each senior class designs their own banner to carry down Campanile hill before commencement; a tradition as old as KU has had commencements (beginning in 1873.)  Not every banner has been preserved over the years.  Some just deteriorated, and many were damaged in a flood.  Luckily most of the banners in the flood were salvaged by Dick Wintermote, former head of the Kansas Alumni Association.

On level five of the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. in Lawrence, images of each banner are displayed along with the full-sized 2011 banner and the most recent graduating classes banner.  This was made possible by the Senior Class Gift of 2011.

If you’d like to view the banners online visit the Class Banner web site at our sister-site Jayhawks.com.
