Dean Smith Awarded Presidential Honor
Dean Smith, a member of the men’s basketball team between 1949-1953, and an assistant coach for the team during the 1953-54 season, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Smith was one of 16 receiving the award, considered the USA’s highest civilian honor. KU coach Roy Williams also attended the event.
Smith went on to become head coach at the University of North Carolina between 1961 and 1997. Under his leadership the Tarheels won the National Championship in 1982 and 1993. Image: Jayhawker Yearbook.
