Another Banner Year

As KU approaches its 141st Annual Commencement on May 19th, I’d like to remind you of the time-honored tradition of commencement class banners.

Each senior class designs their own banner to carry down Campanile hill before commencement; a tradition as old as KU has had commencements (beginning in 1873.)  Not every banner has been preserved over the years.  Some deteriorated, and many were damaged in a flood.  Fortunately many of the banners were salvaged by Dick Wintermote, the former head of the Kansas Alumni Association.

Images of each preserved banner are displayed on level five of the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. in Lawrence, along with the full-sized 2011 class banner and the most recent graduating class banner (pictured).  The Senior Class Gift of 2011 made the display possible.

If you’d like to view the banners online visit the Class Banner website at our sister-site
