Hall of Fame Coach Dean Smith Dies

Dean-smith001 Coach Dean Smith died on February 7, 2015 at the age of 83. He played both basketball and baseball at the University of Kansas in the early 1950s.

Smith was a member of both the 1952 National Championship basketball team and the Final Four team of 1953 at Kansas. After graduating, he served as an Assistant Coach on the KU basketball team.

After leaving Kansas for the Air Force, where he was an assistant coach in basketball and the head coach in golf and baseball, Smith became the Assistant Coach at North Carolina in 1958 and was promoted to head coach in 1961. At Carolina he won two NCAA National Championships, was named ACC Coach of the Year eight times and was the national coach of the year four times. His overall record at North Carolina was 879-254 (.776). He coached the 1976 USA Olympic team to the gold medal.

Smith was born in Emporia, Kansas, and attended high school in Topeka. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1983 and is also a member of both the North Carolina and Kansas Sports Halls of Fame.
