Dean Smith Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom
Dean Smith, a member of the KU men’s basketball team between 1949-1953, and an assistant coach for the team during the 1953-54 season, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Smith was one of 16 receiving the award, considered the USA’s highest civilian honor. Former KU coach Roy Williams also attended the event.
Smith went on to become head coach at the University of North Carolina between 1961 and 1997. Under his leadership the Tarheels won the National Championship in 1982 and 1993. Image: Jayhawker Yearbook.
