Another Banner Year

As KU approaches its 141st Annual Commencement on May 19th, I’d like to remind you of the time-honored traditon of commencement class banners.

Each senior class designs their own banner to carry down Campanile hill before commencement; a tradition as old as KU has had commencements (beginning in 1873.)  Not every banner has been preserved over the years.  Some deteriorated, and many were damaged in a flood.  Fortunately, the former head of the Kansas Alumni Association, Dick Wintermote, salvaged most of the banners.

Images of each preserved banner are displayed along with the full-sized 2011 class banner and the most recent graduating class banner on levels five and six of the Kansas Union in Lawrence.  The Senior Class Gift of 2011 made this display possible.

If you’d like to view the banners online visit the Class Banner website at our sister-site

Why is there no replica of the 1897 banner?

Some of the older banners were lost in a flood in their storage area. If you look at some of the banners you can see the water damage.
