First and Second Downs
During Women’s History Month we celebrate the contributions of two Cora Downs- Grandmother and granddaughter. The first Cora was a journalist in Kansas in 1881 when she was selected to serve on the KU Board of Regents, the first woman to hold the position. The second Cora, granddaughter Cornellia M. Downs, was the first woman to earn a PhD at KU. She developed disease diagnosis techniques that have saved countless lives and revolutionized doctors’ abilities to identify and quickly combat viral and bacterial infections.
