Alumnus and Benefactor Al Self Dies
Madison “Al” Self, University of Kansas alumnus and benefactor, died on January 13, 2013 in Hinsdale, Illinois. He was 91. A memorial service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, Jan.26, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence, Kan.
Self earned his bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from the KU School of Engineering in 1943. He and his wife Lila went on to become some of KU’s most generous donors. They created the Madison A. and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship, the Self Engineering Leadersip Fellows Program, the Mossberg Pharmacy Professorship and the Society of Self Fellows. Self received the School of Engineering’s Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and the Distinguished Service Citation was awarded by KU in 1997. He was recognized as a Life Trustee of KU Endowment in 2010.
