Each Year Is A Banner Year

The University of Kansas has great history and traditions.  But many people don’t know about our commencement banner tradition.

Each senior class designs their own banner to carry down Campanile hill before commencement; a tradition as old as KU has had commencements (beginning in 1873.)  Not every banner has been preserved over the years.  Some deteriorated and many were damaged in a flood.  Fortunately the former head of the Kansas Alumni Association, Dick Wintermote, salvaged most of the banners.

On level five of the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. in Lawrence, images of each banner are displayed along with the full-sized 2011 banner and the most recent graduating classes banner.  The Senior Class Gift of 2011 made this display possible.

If you’d like to view the banners online visit the Class Banner website at our sister-site Jayhawks.com.
